Interview with Eric Durak, MedHealthFit - 9/23/2019, Santa Barbara, CA
Question #1: Guille, you have been an energy healer for over 20 years and Reiki practitioner for ALMOST a decade. What is Reiki and how does it work?
Guille: Reiki is a Japanese holistic healing modality. Like all energy healing techniques, Reiki helps us heal by balancing the flow of Chi or life force energy through the body.
Chi runs through the body pretty much like blood runs through the veins. Our personal experiences in life, our thoughts and emotions negatively affect, restrict and sometimes completely disrupt the normal flow of chi through the body, including to our vital organs and tissues.
If our life force energy is too low or it becomes restricted or blocked, and this perpetuates during a period of time, we will likely become sick.
Reiki heals in two ways:
It calms the nervous system down by inducing a state of deep relaxation which balances our physiological functions and supports the natural healing abilities of the body.
It interacts with negative or dense chi, raising its vibrational frequency to the point that it breaks it down and releases it from the body or the energy field.
Understanding the meaning of the word REIKI helps us understand Reiki itself.
The word Rei-Ki is a combination of two words. REI means of divine origin, Higher Consciousness. It is that omnipresent intelligence and consciousness that pervades it all, living and non-living things. It is the source of all creation in the Universe. REI could be understood as God’s Mind, God’s Wisdom and/or God’s Truth.
Ki is the word used in Japan for life force, the subtle energy that animates all living things. It’s most commonly known as Chi in China or Prana in India. It has also been identified by scientists through time as orgone and bioplasma.
So Reiki is the life force energy that emanates from that Divine Consciousness or Higher Intelligence which is the source of All That Is.
Because it emanates from that Higher Consciousness, Reiki cannot be affected by our human mind and it’s able to regulate and correct vibrational frequencies and the flow of chi in our body and our energy system (including our chakras and meridians/pathways).
Reiki has been practiced for over 2000 thousand years. It is very effective when combined with other main stream medical or therapeutic techniques.
In some states it is accepted as continuing education units for nurses and it is widely practiced in hospitals and medical centers in our country and around the world.
Question #2: How long does a person do a Reiki session? Does it depend on their physical condition? How many sessions should someone take?
Guille: The duration of a typical Reiki session is anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes. It does depend on the age and the particular circumstances of the receiver. Traditionally, it is recommended that a person receives a minimum of 4 sessions. However, this also depends on the particular needs of the client.
Question #3: Reiki work is used in cancer patients - How does it work related to their healing process?
Cancer patients across the world report that Reiki has helped with pain management, relaxation, and side effects of treatment like nausea and stomach upset. Reiki treatment is offered as a complementary therapy in major cancer centers.
In terms of questions about Reiki being able to heal cancer, although there are numerous reports of individuals experiencing significant improvement and in some cases full remission after receiving continued reiki therapy, there is no scientific data that fully supports these claims.
It is important to note that Reiki is not an alternative cancer treatment. It should not be used instead of traditional treatment. Reiki is a complementary therapy to be used to ease the emotional and physical side effects of treatment.
Question #4: Tell me about energy work in general. There is a growing interest in medicine relating to energy - vibration, waves, heat, pressure, etc. How does this work to heal the body - frequency wise?
Guille: I think western medicine is opening to accept that there is more to us than we can see and touch.
The Universe is made of energy, everything within us and around us is made of energy vibrating at different rates and therefore organizing molecules in different types of structures and of course, densities. These different frequencies are measurable. We can even measure the frequency or magnetic resonance of different types of emotions.
Many illnesses arise as a consequence of distorted frequencies or disrupted flow of Chi (energy).
Chi (life force energy) is disrupted by our negative or pessimistic thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It is virtually modified by our perception and interpretation of our life circumstances, experiences, and actions.
Illness does not start in the physical body, it eventually manifests in it. This is why complementary holistic practices that balance the flow of energy through the body help release concentrations of negative chi and negative mental, emotional and behavioral patterns significantly aid the overall healing process.
Question #5: How did you get into the healing arts? What do you like best about what you do? How do you feel about your work here in Santa Barbara?
My first experience with energy and energy healing was as a child. When I was about seven years old, my mother taught me a progressive muscle relaxation breathing technique to use at bedtime. This technique induced me into a meditative state in which I experienced different states of consciousness. Soon after, I had the flu and practiced this technique to help me fall asleep, as I was breathing, I started to feel and see an energy running throughout my body. The next morning, I was not sick anymore. This was my first experience with healing energy.
I was always able to perceive other people’s emotions as if they were my own. I am what you call a sensitive or an empath. Eventually, I became overwhelmed by my heightened perception of all energies around me and I developed extreme anxiety. In 1998, at the age of 25 in Argentina, seeking help for myself, I started formally training in energy management, energy healing, healing meditation, and other metaphysical healing techniques. In 2002, I left my job as a Shipbroker and decided to dedicate my life to personal healing and growth.
In 2011 I opened up a healing practice in Orange County, California and started practicing Reiki and leading Reiki healing meditation groups. In 2014 I started coming up to Santa Barbara during the weekends for healing meditations at Salt Cave Santa Barbara, healing sessions, and Reiki Training Classes. In 2015, I moved here permanently.
I feel very grateful to live in a mindful and spiritually aware community that truly values alternative healing therapies. What I love the most about what I do is being able to help others heal in the same ways that I healed. Helping others heal and transform is my life purpose.
Question #6: Do you know about any research that is being done in the field of Reiki?
Guille: Yes, countless studies are being conducted on the efficacy of Reiki as a complementary therapy in the medical field.
The International Center for Reiki Training, led by William Lee Rand, has constituted the CRR, the Center for Reiki Research, which is dedicated to gaining acceptance for the practice of Reiki by the medical community by persistently using rigorous professional and scientific methods in their studies.
A list of all research studies and critical summaries can be found on their website:

Question #7: There are those who don’t feel is beneficial for healing (probably because they don’t understand its principles). How would you explain to them based on the foundation of Reiki Healing?
Well… one of the guiding principles for Reiki practitioners is that we don't really try to convince anyone of how beneficial Reiki could be for them!
All I can do is share my personal healing experience through Reiki: Reiki and other metaphysical healing techniques have helped me completely overcome very difficult circumstances such as an eating disorder, severe anxiety, and divorce. I have practiced it on my children, on broken bones, pain, and surgery recovery with remarkable results.
I have practiced it on my loved ones to help them overcome severe childhood trauma. I have used it and still use it to deal with physical and emotional challenges in my life.
In my professional practice, I witness similar results on a daily basis. Reiki has profound positive healing effects on many different aspects of my client's lives, including physical health and recovery.
Does this mean Reiki will be right for everyone? Maybe not. If you are interested, try it, but remember Reiki is not magic. It has the ability to balance the energy flow in the body to create health and healing. How long that takes for you, will depend on your particular life circumstances, your mindset, and your individual commitment to yourself and your healing.
Question #8: You are also a health/healing coach. What types of programs do you work on with clients who work on the coaching side of your business?
Personally, I couldn’t begin to heal until I gathered enough information to help me make understand what I was really experiencing in myself and others. This is what I teach in my practice as a spiritual and metaphysical coach.
I work with tools in self-awareness, personal development, meditation, and energy healing. These sessions are based upon cultivating mental and emotional balance and strength through mindfulness which leads to conscious intention, individual empowerment, responsibility, and congruent action.
I teach all levels of Reiki training and a course on Reiki's spiritual guidelines, The Five Reiki Principles.
In addition, I teach a 12-week deeply transformative course called Healing Purpose, designed to help you understand who you truly are and start living a spiritually conscious life with transcendental meaning and purpose. In this course, I teach fundamental spiritual and metaphysical principles to start creating optimal life circumstances and release negative ones.
